WWE Wrestling

World Wrestling Federation

The World Wide Wrestling Federation, or WWWF, was formed after three important bodies left the National Wrestling Alliance to form a separate wrestling federation in the early 1960s. The company changed its name to the shorter World Wrestling Federation in 1979, although no actual changes occurred therein. The World Wrestling Federation early on had only a Northeastern United States control area, as early wrestling promotions each had a regional territory in which unspoken rule dictated they remained. The WWF, however, went national long before it was acceptable, in hiring superstar Hulk Hogan and attempting to market videos and television broadcasts across the entire United States. By building a strong roster, the WWF immediately took control of mainstream professional wrestling in the United States throughout the decade of the 80s. The 1990s, however, were an era marked of steroid use allegations and lawsuits against the WWF. The late 90s and early 21st century was marked with increased success and marketing luck, and the quiet name change from WWF to WWE resulted in little harm to the federation’s business.

WWE Wrestling

World Wrestling Entertainment, Incorporated, or WWE, is a sports entertainment company known for its representation of the professional wrestling industry. The company was previously known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) until the World Wildlife Fund pressed charges against the Wrestling Federation’s use of the same acronym in 2002. The company utilizes all venues of media (called integrated media, in the industry) and utilizes internet, television broadcasts, live events, and recorded events to promote the entertaining sport of professional wrestling. Scripted drama and theatrics dominate the staged ring of professional wrestling matches, as “entertainment,” the last word in the WWE acronym, suggests. The WWE markets three main brands marketed separately under its heading, the Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), SmackDown!, and RAW.

WWE Wrestling Themes

WWE wrestling themes are a way for the WWE to market a particular player, storyline, or match. A theme may be as simple as the continuation of a single story line from one episode or match to the next. However, it may be more complex, and integrate the storylines from several sets of wrestlers into one big match, all along a common theme binding it together. Additionally, the branding of a WWE match with a theme may be as simple as choosing a theme song or entrance song with which a fan may identify a wrestler. Especially in the WWE, in part because it has one of the longest running controls over the wrestling as entertainment industry, as well as being the largest of the wrestling promotions, it is common to have a song edited, remixed, or remade for a specific match, arena, or television showing.
