ECW Wrestling

Extreme Championship Wrestling

Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) is a professional wrestling promotion that began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1992. Since its beginning, this company has performed regular shows of professional wrestling, although the company has changed hands and parent companies several times. ECW actually began in 1992 as Eastern Championship Wrestling under the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). At this point, the ECW was known for targeting an older, more rebellious crowd of the early 90s grunge era at a time when its competitors were busy targeting children with cartoonish images of wrestlers with funny personalities. Upon withdrawing from the NWA and changing names to Extreme Championship Wrestling, the group became known for showing a variety of match styles. ECW made its trademark by becoming less glitzy than the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and its other competitors; it was more associated with dirtier, more “hard-core” wrestling since its start-up.

Music

As with any extreme combat sport performed as entertainment, music is key in setting the tone for the match about to be performed. Sparing no detail, the theatricality of Extreme Championship Wrestling included “extreme” music to be played throughout each match, entry of each wrestler, and at the beginning and end of each show. Many of the entrance song associated with the ECW were compiled into an album entitled “ECW: Extreme Music” on which various artists were recorded. Released in 1998, the album included a lot of heavy metal and grunge rock associated with specific wrestlers. From bands like Megadeath to White Zombie, fans of the ECW were now able to listen to their favorite wrestler’s theme song on a daily basis.
